Visual Arts

Art is what takes over when words fail to communicate.

Madelaine, Counselor

The Visual Arts major is offered both Session 1 & Session 2

Students in the Visual Arts major will receive professional instruction and guidance while creating art in a variety of fun and challenging materials, leaving camp with one or more finished artworks, enhanced technical skills, and a deeper understanding of the elements of art.

Campers enrolled in the Visual Arts major should also select an elective.
We want you to learn as much as possible from your week at camp, and to use what you have learned after you leave. To this end, we make sure to stock plenty of high quality art materials, but all students will need to bring the following essential supplies to camp:
  • A good sketchbook, with a minimum of 50 pages, at least 8 1/2 x 11 inches in size
  • One 2B and two HB drawing pencils
  • Two kneaded erasers

Some drawing projects may rely on reference materials. Many references will be provided, but if you have any interesting photos, images or text that you have an attachment to, please bring them to camp and perhaps they will provide a seed of inspiration for one of your projects.

Additionally, you may bring any other drawing medium you particularly enjoy using (pens, pencils, pastels, etc.) to continue to draw outside of class time as desired.

The Visual Arts major is designed for students who are passionate about visual expression, eager to learn, and open to new ideas and techniques.

Individually, all skill levels will receive personalized guidance to finding their artistic voice, refining their craftsmanship, exploring new techniques and expanding their creative thinking.

Daily practice and progress towards drawing competency is expected, as we engage in group sessions that explore concepts such as proportion, composition, portraiture, mark-making techniques and other basic elements of creative expression.

Visual Arts students should choose an elective as well.

Please Note:
For the final Program on Saturday, all Photography, Textile Arts, Video Arts, and Visual Arts campers are expected to remain on site and should not remove projects prior to the completion of the final performance.
